For volunteers and clients alike – having a chat, in their first language, can make an enormous difference to their day. MiCare offers volunteer-friendly visits to Elders living in aged care facilities and to Elders still living in their homes.
Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and are carefully selected, screened, and trained so they can be matched with the right clients who share their cultural heritage. Our program is state-wide in Victoria and operates in the following regions in Queensland: West Moreton, Gold Coast, Brisbane North, and Brisbane South.
MiCare employs a unique and highly successful model of recruiting, matching, training, and supporting volunteers.
The program sees volunteers visit regularly to have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee, play games, share arts and crafts, and share culturally relevant activities.
General Volunteering
One of the ways that MiCare provides care to the elderly people of Victoria and Queensland is through its Visiting Programs:
- Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme ACVVS (VIC and QLD) formerly the CVS program. Funded by the Australian Government.
- Friendly Visiting (VIC only)
Our programs assist those who live independently or in a nursing home by bringing them into contact with volunteers who share their language and background. The program aims to provide one-on-one contact (which can often grow into friendship) with the local visiting volunteer team, also organizing get-togethers that are attended by the volunteers and the Elders they visit.
Volunteers can also assist MiCare through,
- Residential and Kiosk Volunteering – within our facilities in Victoria and QLD
- Auxillary
- Bus Drivers
MiCare also recruits volunteers for some local after-school programs in Werribee and Laverton:
- Learning Support Program (VIC)
The Learning Support Program is developed to assist newly arrived young people from refugee backgrounds with their schoolwork, including basic literacy and numeracy skills. The group also assists in developing young people’s confidence to help them both socially and academically to participate in class in a more meaningful way.
Training & Support
There is a training program that each volunteer must complete before they participate in the visiting program. MiCare will provide this training for each person accepted into the program. Also, for volunteering in the Learning Support Program it is required to follow a special online training module. All applicants need to be aware that a police check is mandatory and will be conducted by MiCare as part of the recruitment process as well as current COVID and Flu vaccinations.
Volunteering brings fun and fulfillment to your life.
Volunteering is vital to the social, economic, and environmental well-being of organizations like ours. The simplest definition of volunteering is working for a not-for-profit organization for no pay. It’s a way of becoming involved in a community that needs you in a way that is interesting, personally satisfying, and fun.
Volunteering can be formal or informal, full-time or part-time, occasional or even once-off. Whatever type of volunteering you want to do, we would love to have you on our team. At MiCare we rely on volunteers for many things, including support for extended families, fundraising, community building, and social networks. These activities are seen as an intrinsic part of belonging to our community. We would love you to join our family.
