At 90 years old, Gerardus Van Laake found himself in a new chapter of his culinary journey. Retired from the bustling kitchens of renowned restaurants, he now spends his days sharing his love for cooking in a more intimate setting: the activities room at Margriet Manor (MM).
Gerard and his wife Fien were long term residents at Beatrix Village before moving into Margriet Manor. They are an active part of the community and Gerard can still be found cooking the occasional treat for fellow elders.
Despite the change in scenery, Van Laake’s passion for creating exquisite desserts remains undiminished. Armed with his trusty apron and a lifetime of culinary expertise, he decided to introduce the magic of his famous Mocha Cakes to everyone.
Reflecting on his lifelong love affair with food and the joy it had brought him and others, he embarked on one last epicurean adventure: crafting the ultimate Mocha Cake. In 2004 Gerard presented a large Mocha Tart for Petra’s 50th birthday! Every year after that Gerard made a tart for Petra’s birthday including on her 60th birthday as well!
